APD says No Wrong Door is spacing out crisis contacts with Austin's most frequent cases, and civil rights groups want police out of it.

The ACLU of Texas and others say police should leave the program or it needs more safeguards.

A city memo says APD crisis contacts with 99 "high utilizers" went from roughly once every 11 days to once every 16, measured over 90 days starting May 20. About 40 of them have signed consent agreements, per Austin Current. VOCAL-TX, the Texas Civil Rights Project and the ACLU of Texas, joined by Disability Rights Texas and public defenders, want police out "or additional safeguards." The city says program officers "have not arrested a single NWD client," and David Gray says mental health professionals will take over treatment plans. One caveat: the figures are APD's and the city's own measures. (KXAN)
